Quick Answer: Schools on Maui are part of one statewide system, the Hawaiสปi State Department of Education (HIDOE), and public school assignment is based on home address. Maui is served by two HIDOE complex areas, and Kลซlanihฤkoสปi High in Kฤซhei opened in August 2023. Geographic exception applications for the next school year are accepted January 1 to March 1.
I’m Benjamin Finnerty, a REALTORยฎ in Kฤซhei with Keller Williams Realty Maui, and school assignment questions come up often when people are planning a move to Maui. Because public school assignment follows the address, the home you buy or rent largely determines the assigned school. I don’t rank or recommend schools, but I can help you understand how the system works and what to verify before you sign a lease or make an offer.
How are public schools on Maui organized?
Hawaiสปi has a single statewide school district, HIDOE, instead of county school districts. Within HIDOE, Maui County is served by two complex areas:
- Baldwin-Kekaulike-Kลซlanihฤkoสปi-Maui, which includes four high schools: Henry Perrine Baldwin High (Wailuku), King Kekaulike High (Pukalani), Kลซlanihฤkoสปi High (Kฤซhei) and Maui High (Kahului), plus the elementary and middle schools that feed them.
- Hฤna-Lahainaluna-Lฤnaสปi-Molokaสปi, which includes Lahainaluna High in West Maui, Hฤna’s school and the schools on Lฤnaสปi and Molokaสปi.
Each high school sits at the top of a “complex” of elementary and intermediate or middle schools. When you look at a home, it’s useful to know which complex it falls in.
Does where I buy on Maui decide my child’s public school?
Generally, yes. Hawaiสปi law requires students to attend the public school that serves their home address, so I recommend checking the school assignment for a specific address before you make an offer if it matters to you.
- Verify the address, not the neighborhood name. Attendance boundaries don’t always follow neighborhood names. Confirm with the school or HIDOE for the specific address.
- South Maui now has a public high school. Before Kลซlanihฤkoสปi High opened in Kฤซhei in August 2023, South Maui high school students typically commuted to Central Maui.
- Upcountry, North Shore and Central Maui are mostly served by the Baldwin, King Kekaulike and Maui High complexes. West Maui is served by Lahainaluna.
Can my child attend a different public school on Maui?
Yes, through a geographic exception (GE), if there’s space and the request is approved. According to HIDOE:
- Applications for the next school year must be submitted between January 1 and March 1.
- If the student is new to HIDOE, you submit the form to next year’s home school (the school for your address). If the student is already enrolled, you submit it to their current school.
- Certain requests get added consideration, such as siblings of students already approved at that school, children of staff at the school, and students seeking a specialized program their home school doesn’t offer.
If you’re moving to Maui for the 2027โ28 school year, the January 1 to March 1, 2027 window is the one to plan around, which means ideally knowing your Maui address, or at least your target area, by early next year.
What does a student need to enroll in a Maui public school?
A physical exam, immunizations and TB clearance, documented on HIDOE’s Student’s Health Record form. Students entering a Hawaiสปi school for the first time need:
- A physical exam completed within one year before the first day of attendance at a Hawaiสปi school (and again before seventh grade)
- Immunizations based on the student’s age and grade
- Tuberculosis (TB) clearance
A student missing some records may be allowed provisional entry with proof of an upcoming medical appointment. Still, it’s much easier to schedule these before you move, so ask your mainland pediatrician to complete the paperwork early.
What about private and charter schools on Maui?
Maui has public charter schools, which are tuition-free but have their own application processes, and a range of private schools. Kamehameha Schools Maui in Pukalani and Seabury Hall in Makawao are two of the better-known private options. Private school applications often have winter deadlines for the following fall, so contact schools early if that’s your plan. Commute times matter too, since Maui traffic can make a 15-mile drive feel much longer at drop-off time.
How should school plans shape a Maui home search?
- Know which schools you want to verify first, then check assignments for specific addresses.
- Think about the commute from home to school to work. On Maui, a few miles can make a big difference.
- Consider renting first if you’re unsure. Renting for 6 to 12 months lets you learn an area before you buy. My post on renting on Maui before you buy covers current rent data.
- Time your move around the school calendar. Moving over winter break or in the summer usually makes the transition easier. My guide on timing your car, pets and closing when moving to Maui helps with the logistics.
My Take: What I’m Telling People Moving to Maui
The single most useful step is to verify the assigned school for each specific address you’re seriously considering, directly with HIDOE or the school, before you write an offer or sign a lease. Neighborhood names and attendance boundaries don’t always line up, and the address is what counts.
Second, work backward from the calendar. For the 2027โ28 school year, the geographic exception window runs January 1 to March 1, 2027, and health paperwork is easier to finish before you leave the mainland. If you’re still choosing between areas, the commute from home to school to work is worth driving at the actual times you’ll travel. If Central Maui is on your list, my guide to living in Wailuku and Kahului is a good starting point.
