Quick Answer: Internet on Maui took a big step in 2026. On May 4, 2026, Hawaiian Telcom announced that Maui is “fully fiber enabled,” the fourth Hawaiian island to reach that milestone. Separately, the state began a $149.5 million federal broadband expansion in August 2026 for about 7,000 unserved and underserved locations statewide. Service still varies by address.
I’m Benjamin Finnerty, a REALTORยฎ in Kฤซhei with Keller Williams Realty Maui. “What’s the internet like?” is now one of the first questions I hear from people planning a move, especially if they work remotely. The short answer is that Maui’s options have improved a lot, but the only answer that really counts is the one for the specific address you’re buying or renting. Here’s what changed this year and how to check.
Does Maui have fiber internet in 2026?
Yes. Hawaiian Telcom announced on May 4, 2026, that Maui is fully fiber enabled, meaning homes and businesses can connect to its fiber-optic network, which it sells as Fioptics. Maui followed Molokaสปi, Lฤnaสปi and Kauaสปi in reaching that milestone, according to Hoodline’s report on the announcement.
Key points from the announcement, as reported by Maui Now, KHON2 and Hoodline:
- Fiber service offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, which matters for video calls and large file uploads.
- Hawaiian Telcom said its statewide build was about 88% of the way to its goal as of May 2026.
- The company’s stated goal is to make Hawaiสปi the first fully fiber-enabled state by the end of 2026, as part of a roughly $1.7 billion commitment first announced in January 2025.
One caution: none of the coverage defined “fully fiber enabled” address by address, and none gave a count of Maui homes passed. Treat it as a strong sign that fiber is widely available, not as a guarantee for a particular home or condo.
What is the BEAD broadband expansion, and does it affect Maui?
BEAD is the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program. Hawaiสปi is using $149.5 million in BEAD funds for about 7,000 unserved and underserved locations statewide, with roughly 82% slated for fiber. The University of Hawaiสปi Broadband Office coordinates the effort, and the state and UH announced the start of deployment on August 4, 2026.
| BEAD in Hawaiสปi (as of August 2026) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Federal funds | $149.5 million |
| Unserved/underserved locations statewide | About 7,000 |
| Share expected to get fiber | About 82% |
| Homes Hawaiian Telcom will connect under its contract | About 5,800 |
Maui Now and The Maui News both reported that the announcement didn’t break out Maui County locations or give completion dates. If you’re looking at a remote property, it’s worth asking whether it’s one of the locations in line for an upgrade, but I wouldn’t buy based on a future connection.
How can I check internet service at a specific Maui address?
Check three ways before you commit. First, enter the address in the FCC National Broadband Map (broadbandmap.fcc.gov), which shows which providers report service there and at what advertised speeds. Second, check each provider’s own availability tool with the exact unit number. Third, ask the seller or landlord which provider they use and what speeds they actually get.
For condos, add a fourth step: ask the association. Some buildings have bulk service agreements, specific wiring or rules about installing equipment such as satellite dishes. The association’s documents and minutes will usually tell you.
Is internet reliable on Maui during storms?
It depends on the connection and on backup power. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said in Hawaiian Telcom’s announcement that “fiber allowed Maui residents to be more resilient during the recent Kona-low storms,” and that backup power helped keep households connected. Hawaiสปi had a pair of Kona-low storms in March 2026.
If your income depends on being online, plan for outages: a battery backup for your modem and router, a cellular hotspot as a second connection, and a check of cell signal at the property. Upcountry, East Maui and other areas with hills and valleys can have very different cell coverage from one street to the next, so test it in person.
How does internet affect where to live on Maui?
It’s one factor alongside commute, cost and climate. Central and South Maui have a lot of the island’s housing and services; Upcountry and the North Shore offer different property types, often on larger lots. My guides to Upcountry Maui and renting on Maui before you buy cover the other trade-offs.
Also budget for it. Internet is one more monthly bill on top of electricity and water, which I break down in my cost of living on Maui guide.
My Take: What I’m Telling Buyers and Renters
If you work remotely, make internet a written condition of your search, not an afterthought. Before an offer, I’d check the FCC map and the provider’s own lookup for the exact unit, and ask the seller for a recent bill showing the plan. During your inspection period, run a speed test on site if the seller has active service.
For condo buyers, read the association rules on wiring and equipment, and ask whether fiber is already run to the units or only to the building. For homes on larger lots, ask how far the line runs from the road and whether there’s a cost to connect. Build a second connection into your budget either way.
The 2026 fiber news is good for Maui. Just remember that a press release describes an island, and your lease or purchase contract covers one address.
